We've covered what a CPU is and how to choose a computer. But if you want to understand why your computer feels fast or slow โ€” and how to interpret processor comparisons โ€” it helps to go a little deeper on CPU performance. This guide explains processor performance in plain terms.

Here's how to understand CPU performance โ€” cores, threads, clock speed, and what actually makes a computer feel fast.

Cores & threads

Cores and threads determine how much a processor can do at once:

  • Cores. Each core handles tasks. More cores = more simultaneous work (see our CPU guide).
  • Threads. Each core can often handle multiple threads (lines of work). Two threads per core is common.
  • For multitasking (many apps, video editing, heavy work), more cores and threads help.
  • For single tasks (many games, basic apps), single-core performance matters more.
  • More cores help with multitasking and demanding parallel work. Single-core speed matters for tasks that run on one core. Both matter, in different situations.

    Clock speed

    Clock speed is how fast a processor works, but it's easily misread:

  • Clock speed (GHz) is roughly how many operations per second.
  • Higher is faster โ€” within the same generation. You can compare clock speeds between similar CPUs.
  • You can't compare across generations. A newer CPU at a lower clock can beat an older one at a higher clock, because it does more per operation.
  • Clock speed matters, but only within the same CPU generation. Don't compare clock numbers across different generations โ€” the newer design does more work per cycle.

    Cache & architecture

    Two things that affect performance beyond cores and clock:

  • Cache. A small, ultra-fast memory on the CPU. More cache speeds up access to frequently-used data.
  • Architecture. The CPU's design โ€” newer architectures are more efficient, doing more per operation.
  • These are why "newer generation" matters. A new generation has a better architecture and more cache.
  • Cache and architecture are why newer processor generations outperform older ones at the same clock speed. Newer is usually faster and more efficient.

    What makes a PC feel fast

    Here's an important insight: the processor isn't the only thing that makes a computer feel fast. In everyday use, these matter a lot:

  • An SSD. Fast storage makes booting and opening apps feel instant โ€” often more noticeable than a faster CPU (see our SSD guide).
  • Enough RAM. Running out of RAM slows everything down (see our RAM guide).
  • The processor matters for heavy, sustained tasks (rendering, compiling, heavy multitasking).
  • Optimization. Software and background processes affect perceived speed (see our optimization guide).
